Pratipada Shraddha is a sacred ritual performed to honor deceased family members who passed away on the Pratipada Tithi, which includes both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha Pratipada.
The Pratipada Shraddha Tithi is also deemed appropriate for performing the Shraddha ceremony in memory of maternal grandparents (referred to as Nana-Nani). In cases where there is no one available to perform the Shraddha at the maternal home, observing the Shraddha on this Tithi is believed to appease the souls of the grandparents. Even if the exact death anniversary of the maternal grandparents is unknown, the Shraddha can still be performed on this auspicious day. It is firmly believed that conducting this Shraddha brings happiness and prosperity to the household.
The Pratipada Shraddha is also known as the Padwa Shraddha.
Pitru Paksha Shraddhas are considered Parvan Shraddhas (पार्वण श्राद्ध), and the most auspicious time to perform them is during the Kutup Muhurat and Rohina, or any Muhurat after that until Aparahna Kala is over. The Tarpan (तर्पण) is performed at the conclusion of the Shraddha ceremony.
